A woman of Thompson, in Manitoba, Canada is suing the Burntwood Regional Health Authority and four doctors for the brain damage she suffered after a spinal column cyst went undetected for more than a year of medical visits.
The Thompson woman is now unable to work as a First Nations mental health counselor and needs daily assistance, alleged experts. The Burntwood Regional Health Authority in Thompson claims they have not yet received the statement of claim and the allegations remain unproven in court.
The suit is for unspecified damages, including loss of income.
According to the Thompson woman, none of the four doctors had properly checked her and ordered an MRI, resulting in her eventual brain damage. She visited the hospital time after time and was misdiagnosed a number of times, until a visiting doctor consented to see her. An urgent MRI was ordered immediately and showed that she needed brain surgery.
The Thompson woman’s problems started in March 2008, explained reps. She was frequently at the hospital and clinic in Thompson, several times in that month, complaining of dizziness, loss of motor control, impaired hearing and vision, vomiting and a sensation of numbness in her face.
After she fell at home and was taken to the hospital, she was diagnosed with an inner ear infection. A week later, she went back to the hospital, because her symptoms had not gone away. The doctor told her she had a middle-ear infection. There were no neurological tests administered and her condition continued to worsen, even to the point of paralysis that lasted for five days. Even then, the doctor would do nothing more than prescribe Tylenol. New york City and Staten Island doctors are studying this case.
Six more mistaken diagnoses followed until she was finally told she had malformation with a syringomyelia cyst. Before that, no one had performed any neurological examination on the Thompson woman and the suspected causes ranged from a viral upper respiratory tract infection to gall bladder problems. The cyst caused her spine to malform, damaging her spinal cord and brain, due to a buildup of fluid in her neck.
